Fixing a Cracked Cigar: A Step-by-Step Guide
We’ve all been there – you’re enjoying a great cigar, and suddenly you notice a crack. Don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world! With a few simple steps, you can repair your cigar and get back to enjoying it.
What makes your cigar wrapper crack?
There are several reasons why your cigar wrapper might crack. And no. It’s not always, or even usually not an indication of a dry cigar.
When you smoke a cigar, the heat usually cause the cigar to expand, and when the cigar is humidified more than the ambient air, it can cause further expansion. You shouldn’t forget that the wrapper of a cigar is just a tobacco leaf. It can stretch to some extent, but it can also crack. Some cigars use delicate or thin wrapper leaves, which increases their chances of cracking or unraveling.
Another reason for cracks is poor handling. It can happen when the cigar is packed, when you take it out of the box, or if it drops. Shit happens.
The good news? most cracks or damages are easy to fix, and won’t affect your enjoyment of a fine cigar. So don’t panic!
Quick fixes
Honey
Apply a small amount of honey to the cracked area. Don’t use too much honey, and rub it first between your fingers, so to spread it evenly. Be careful not to burn your fingers if your cigar is burning though!
ChapStick or lip balm
Similar to honey, applying a small amount of ChapStick or lip balm can help seal the crack and let you finish smoking your cigar.
Cigar glue is a special adhesive designed for cigars. It’s usually (but not always) natural and it should be safe.
Cigar glue is also used by rollers at the factory, to seal the cap on the cigar.
You can make your own cigar glue, or buy a ready-made one. Cigar glue usually pays for itself after one or two repairs. Saving your precious cigar, rather than having to throw it away.
Most cigar glues come in a nail-polish bottle with a brush.
make sure your glue does not have any clamps or sediments.
2. Dab
the brush so it’s not dripping and still contains sufficient amount of glue.
3. Apply
the glue to the cracked cigar. Be careful to use the precise amount.
